On the move with Felix Nussbaum Panel Discussion

'On the move with Felix Nussbaum'. The latest iteration of the international touring exhibition at Artcore Gallery shows 20 reproductions of the German-Jewish Surrealist Painter Felix Nussbaum, and tells the story of his life and work during World War two and personal journey during exile and eventually the Holocaust.

The exhibition originates in Derby's twin city Osnabrück and is touring different European countries to share the story of the artist, show his work to a wide audience and to preserve his legacy. The work is a powerful and insightful look at this important period in European history and of the human condition during war and crisis.

We have invited a panel of guest speakers to elaborate on and explore the work of Felix Nussbaum , to view this work from different perspectives. We hope that the discussion will reveal what the work means historically and how we can situate and relate to this today.

Our guest speakers for the evening:

Eve Sacker

Eve Sacker is a Multicultural educator based in Derby. She works with the Open Centre, specialising in helping people to learn about Jewish traditions, and is the Interfaith Representative at Nottingham Liberal Synagogue

Maria Photiou

Maria Photiou is an Art Historian and a Research Fellow at the University of Derby, UK. She holds a doctorate in Art History from Loughborough University. Her current research focuses on contemporary art and the connections between migration, gender, memory and the politics of belonging. She is co-editor of the anthology Art, Borders and Belonging: On Home and Migration (Bloomsbury, 2021). She organised the 2022 international online Symposium titled 'Creative Homemaking: Visualising Home in Times of Crisis', that was funded by the University of Derby's Participatory Research Fund.
