Description

An afternoon with Sue Hubbard.  Artcore, Albert Street, Derby. 10th October, 2pm.

Presented by Derby Poetry Society in association with Artcore.

Sue Hubbard has published five collections of poetry, as well as being a novelist and Art Critic. Her 2023 collection of poems, God’s Little Artist is a poetic biography of the Welsh painter, Gwen John (1876-1939) whose reputation has grown to exceed her previously more lauded brother, Augustus.

God’s Little Artist  is described by Moniza Alvi as “An immersive and revelatory reading experience” and has been widely praised by poets and art critics.

Join us at Artcore to hear Sue read from the collection and discuss the life of this key 20th century artist.

This event marks the closing chapter in the history of Derby Poetry Society. Founded in 1928, it thrived during the second half of the Twentieth Century and into the first decade of this one. Membership went into decline in the years preceding the pandemic and afterwards the decision was taken to discontinue the Society. We were predominantly a poetry appreciation group and were keen to use our remaining funds to help finance an event promoting poetry in Derby’s most innovative and freshest centre for the Arts – to “go out with a bang, not a whimper”!
