Throughout the planning, implementation and evaluation of our Untold Stories project we have learnt how powerful sharing lived experiences can be and how creative activities are an ideal catalyst for this. Our Untold Stories project is helping to build bridges and strengthen relationships through greater understanding of life experiences, and is using art in a way which can facilitate recovery and self-expression. We can use art as a catalyst for emotions and therefore the sharing of experiences.
Upon evaluation of the project so far, we have observed the importance of fostering a safe, welcoming and positive workshop environment, to support participants to feel comfortable to share, learn, socialise and build-bonds with new people.
Through this project we are keen to celebrate our participant’s individuality. They have found friends and what many describe as a ‘safe space’ within our centres. With the freedom to explore art in a fun, warm and inclusive way, many of our participants have found their voice, and creative niche. One example highlights the experiences of one of our workshop participants who discovered a love of poetry and spoken word which they then used to explore their feelings regarding their personal life experiences. This person tackled difficult subject matter relating to race and equality, but through Artcore they have had space to explore these words and feelings. They have since grown in confidence, formed new friendships, explored new techniques and media that they have never before considered.
