My proposal for this residency is to deep drive into the processes and people behind the design and manufacture of the prestigious and historical company Royal Crown Derby, which is based in the heart of the city. It is a family run business employing people from the Derby community. I have envisioned many hands to represent the labour-intensive processes involved through each stage of making. I find it fascinating how many skilled workers it takes to process a piece from start to finish. This line of enquiry intrigues me as I am a small part of that production process. Having been involved with fettling pieces, which is cleaning up seam lines from casting and then smoothing each piece with a wet sponge before it goes off for its first firing. This is my starting point for the residency.
To get inspiration I will visit the Derby museum, museum of making and do a tour of the museum at Royal Crown Derby and factory floor.
